Mentorship
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for all of the amazing people who gave me the time of day as I was getting started. We don’t gatekeep here!
Mentorship is essential to building the next generation of great book designers and illustrators, and I’m always happy to help where I can. Are you a student or recent grad looking to break into the publishing industry as a book designer or illustrator? Or even a more experienced designer looking to switch industries? I set aside time each month for informational chats and portfolio reviews!
In 2026, I will be launching a more structured mentorship program with a small group, so be sure to check back in for more info and follow on Instagram for updates!
FAQs

I’ve always loved reading and art, and when I was in college I realized that this would be the perfect career to combine both of those passions. Books were so important to me as a child, and I was often drawn to a book based on the cover alone. I found the books I really needed WHEN I needed them, and I stayed for all my favorite stories. I love the idea of getting to play a small role in helping someone find their new favorite book, whether they’re scrolling online and pausing at sprayed edges or beelining for that hot pink cover from across the bookstore. Also, if I have to participate in this capitalistic hellscape, making books for kids is a decent way to do that.

Yes! I have blog posts for submission guidelines (link) and what I’m looking for in a portfolio here! (link)

Yes, I do! But since I have a full-time job, my freelance availability is limited, and my schedule tends to book up. Please feel free to reach out via my contact form (link) for availability and pricing!

I do portfolio reviews, but I’m trying to limit the amount of informational interviews I do! A lot of people ask similar questions and are seeking advice on the same topics, which is why I’ve put together this resource page. I would urge you to check out some of the interviews I’ve done - I give a lot of info in those! For a portfolio review please use my contact form (link).

Fill your portfolio with book related projects! Practice! Take your illustrations and add
type to them like they’re book covers or spreads from an interior, or repurpose your design work from school into something book-related. Flex your typography skills and show that you can integrate a title, author name, and tagline or blurb into a composition with art in a way that displays and understanding of hierarchy. Go to the library or a bookstore and see what is trending and look at all the different elements that make up a book to try to replicate that in your work. You can redesign classics, your favorite books,or just make them up!
